CertainTeed

Acoustical ceiling tiles and the Ecophon premium acoustic line. Part of Saint-Gobain.

About CertainTeed

CertainTeed is a building products company owned by Saint-Gobain, one of the oldest and largest construction materials companies in the world (founded in France in 1665). CertainTeed makes roofing, siding, insulation, drywall, and ceiling products. Their ceiling division produces acoustical tiles and partners with Ecophon (also a Saint-Gobain brand) for premium acoustic systems.

CertainTeed is the third-largest ceiling tile manufacturer in the US market, behind Armstrong and USG. They're a strong alternative when the spec calls for something different or when pricing is competitive.

CertainTeed Products We Install

Acoustical Ceiling Tiles

  • Baroque — The standard commercial tile. Mineral fiber, NRC 0.55, available in multiple edge profiles. Competes with Armstrong Cortega and USG Radar.
  • Symphony — Mid-range tile with improved acoustic and aesthetic performance. NRC 0.60–0.70 depending on the specific product.
  • Adagio — Premium tile for spaces that need better-than-average acoustics and a cleaner look.
  • Vinylrock — Vinyl-faced ceiling tile for kitchens, restrooms, and areas that need a washable, scrubbable ceiling surface. Moisture-resistant and easy to maintain.

Ecophon Acoustic Systems

Ecophon is the premium arm. Where standard ceiling tiles are mineral fiber, Ecophon products are high-density fiberglass with a glass fleece face. The acoustic performance is notably better than standard tiles — NRC 0.85 to 1.00 across the line.

  • Ecophon Focus — The most popular Ecophon line. Clean-faced fiberglass panels in a concealed or semi-concealed grid. NRC 0.85+. Spec'd heavily in schools, healthcare, and offices where acoustics are a priority.
  • Ecophon Master — Premium panel for spaces with demanding acoustic requirements. Recording studios, auditoriums, music rooms.
  • Ecophon Solo — Free-hanging acoustical panels (clouds) that mount below the ceiling. Used when you can't install a full suspended ceiling or need spot treatment.

Why We Work with CertainTeed

CertainTeed fills a few roles for us:

  • Competitive pricing. On standard commercial tile projects, CertainTeed often comes in 5-15% below Armstrong or USG. On a 50,000 sq ft office building, that savings is real money.
  • Ecophon for premium jobs. When the acoustic spec calls for high-performance fiberglass panels (healthcare, education, performing arts), Ecophon is one of the best options available. The products perform, and the Saint-Gobain backing means solid technical support.
  • Vinylrock for wet areas. Their vinyl-faced tile is the go-to for kitchens, pool areas, and restrooms where standard mineral fiber tiles would sag and stain.

CertainTeed vs. Armstrong vs. USG

For standard commercial tiles, all three manufacturers make products that perform similarly. NRC ratings, fire ratings, and sizes are comparable across the board. The differences come down to price (CertainTeed is often cheapest), finish quality (Armstrong tends to have the cleanest faces), and distribution (Armstrong and USG have broader stocking at local distributors).

For premium acoustic systems, Ecophon competes with Armstrong Ultima and USG Halcyon. Ecophon panels typically have higher NRC ratings and a more refined aesthetic, but at a premium price.
